Speaker: Dr. Jim Tanner
Dr. Tanner has 39 years experience in community corrections. He obtained his Ph.D. in Cognitive Social Psychology from the University of Illinois, specializing in Phenomenology and Criminology. He serves as the computer forensic examiner for Probation in the 20th Judicial District of Colorado and has examined more than 1,300 sex offenders’ computers. He is nationally recognized as a leader in management of sex offenders’ computers. He is responsible for the creation of Field Search, a forensic software application in use in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Australia. He also developed the Structured Sex Offender Treatment Review (SSOTR) in use nationally to monitor sex offender behavior.
Dr. Tanner will present on the following topics:
Inside the Mind of a Sex Offender - Nationally, 70% of all sex offenders are supervised in the community. This session focuses professionals on the cognitive set of the common sex offender and expands and clarifies the goals of investigation, prosecution, and effective containment. We will discuss sex offenders’ perception, ideation, grooming strategies, and cognitive processes. The Internet’s effect on this cognitive set will also be explored. Investigators, prosecutors, and supervising agents will leave this session with a new understanding of the sex offender.
Deception Detection - Improve your interview skills. Learn how to tell when someone is editing something out of a verbal or written statement. This session will cover the basics of Discourse Analysis, a lexical and syntactical approach to analyzing statements. Using clear examples, Dr. Tanner will explain how a respondent’s shifts in words and grammar can point interviewers to “hot spots” in a statement that need to be probed. You will never listen to a conversation or interview the same way again if you attend this session.
Protecting Yourself and Your Family on the Internet - the Internet is a part of the modern world. For most of us, we know enough to get things done. But we all hear about the ‘dark side” of the web. Join a cyber crime analyst as he talks in plain English about the technical problems everyone faces each time they log into their computer.
Living with the Memories - People working crimes against women and children see and hear many things they would rather not. These memories can have a disturbing effect on professionals and their families. Based on his 39 years experience working in criminal justice, Dr. Tanner explains what's behind the secondary trauma of working these cases and provides simple but effective steps we can take to help us live with these stories and images once we have seen and heard them. You owe it to yourself and your family to attend this session.
This training will benefit all multi-disciplinary professionals who work in the field of child maltreatment. The training is free and limited to 125 participants. CEU’s will be requested for Law Enforcement, Social Work, Attorneys, Domestic Violence Advocates and Corrections.
